Singapore Company Address Requirements Explained: ACRA Contact Address and Alternate Address

Table of Contents

When planning to incorporate a company in Singapore, understanding address requirements might seem straightforward at first. However, these requirements go well beyond simply entering a physical location on a form. They are fundamental to legal compliance, public transparency, personal privacy protection, and smooth regulatory interaction with Singapore’s business regulator, the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA).

This article explains what types of addresses must be provided to ACRA, how the Contact Address regime replaces the former Alternate Address system, and what foreign founders should know before incorporation. We also discuss practical implications and how professional services can help you stay compliant and protect your privacy.

Why Singapore Company Address Requirements Matter

Singapore is widely known for its ease of doing business and strong legal framework for corporate governance. Accurate address information ensures that:

  • A company can receive official notices and legal correspondence
  • Regulators can contact the business and its officers if required
  • Public records remain transparent for stakeholders and enforcement authorities
  • Personal residential addresses of directors and business owners are fully protected

Address requirements are not just bureaucratic details to fill in once and forget. They are ongoing compliance obligations that must be maintained as circumstances change.

Overview of Address Types Required by ACRA

When you register a business with ACRA, several categories of addresses may be required depending on your entity type and role within that entity. The key address types are:

Registered Office Address

A registered office address is the official business address of your Singapore company. It is the address where all formal communications, notices, and statutory documents will be sent. The registered office must:

  • Be a physical address in Singapore
  • Be operational and accessible during normal office hours
  • Not be a P.O. Box address

The registered office address does not have to be where daily business operations are conducted, but it must be an actual place where records are kept and where communication from authorities can be received.

Residential Address

Every company officer, such as directors and company secretaries, must provide a residential address to ACRA when they are appointed. Under traditional practice, these residential addresses were publicly available on ACRA’s business registers.

Contact Address

Until recently, Singapore allowed an Alternate Address to be provided in place of a residential address for public display. Following the passage of the ACRA (Registry and Regulatory Enhancements) Bill on 2 July 2024, the Alternate Address regime has been replaced by a Contact Address regime, aimed at enhancing personal data protection and privacy. Under this new regime, the Contact Address is the address shown on public records instead of a residential address. Individuals who wish to use their residential address as their Contact Address may do so.

What Is a Contact Address and How Is It Different?

The Contact Address concept is designed to replace the long-standing “Alternate Address” regime, where individuals could elect to provide a different address from their residential address for public display. The new Contact Address regime brings several important changes:

Contact Address Is Mandatory

Under the updated rules, all company officers and eligible individuals must provide a Contact Address. This requirement replaces the optional Alternate Address filing. If no separate Contact Address is submitted, the residential address may continue to be displayed until a Contact Address is provided.

Contact Address Is Public, Residential Address Is Protected

The Contact Address is the address that will appear in ACRA’s public business records. The underlying residential address is still maintained in ACRA’s internal records for official correspondence and enforcement purposes but will not be displayed publicly.

No Filing Fee

In the old Alternate Address regime, a fee of S$40 was charged for filing an Alternate Address. With the Contact Address regime, there is no fee for filing a Contact Address.

Must Be in the Same Jurisdiction as Residential Address

The Contact Address should be located in the same country or jurisdiction as the individual’s residential address. It cannot be a P.O. Box address.

Contact Address for Shareholders

For individuals who are only shareholders and not also position holders, their address currently recorded in public registers will be automatically converted into a Contact Address. If shareholders prefer a different Contact Address, they should engage their corporate secretary or service provider to update it before the regime takes effect.

Transition From Alternate Address to Contact Address

Before the implementation of the Contact Address regime, individuals could voluntarily provide an Alternate Address to keep their residential address out of public records. This was particularly useful for privacy-conscious business owners and directors.

Under the new rules, existing Alternate Addresses were automatically converted into Contact Addresses at the end of 2024.

If you prefer to use a different address for public display, you can provide a new Contact Address at any time. This flexibility allows directors and shareholders to protect their residential privacy while meeting compliance obligations.

Practical Examples of Contact Address Use

To illustrate how the Contact Address works in practice:

  • A foreign founder residing in Malaysia incorporates a Singapore company. If they do not wish their Malaysian residential address to appear in Singapore’s public business records, they may provide a Contact Address such as a corporate office address in Malaysia.
  • A company director based overseas can use the address of a corporate service provider based in the same country for public display. This keeps personal information private while ensuring ACRA compliance.

Address Compliance Requirements and Best Practices

Here are some practical must-knows for foreign business owners:

Registered Office Must Be in Singapore

For companies incorporated in Singapore, a valid registered office address must be maintained in Singapore. This serves as the legal address for statutory communication and must be accessible during normal business hours.

Contact Address for Directors and Officers

Every company officer must provide a Contact Address. This applies to:

  • Directors
  • Alternate directors
  • CEOs
  • Managing Directors
  • Company secretaries

Each company officer can only maintain one Contact Address, and it will be reflected uniformly across all entities they are linked to.

Address Must Be Accurate and Updated

ACRA requires registered addresses and Contact Addresses to be accurate. Any changes in address must be updated promptly through BizFile, and failure to do so can result in compliance issues.

How Corporate Service Providers Can Help

Address compliance can be complex, especially for first-time founders from overseas. As a corporate service provider, we can support you with:

  • Singapore company incorporation and registered office address setup
  • Filing and maintaining your Contact Address and registered addresses in ACRA’s BizFile portal

Engaging a professional provider can safeguard your personal information while ensuring your Singapore business meets statutory requirements from day one.
